Dr. Chirag Gandhi is an expert in both open cerebrovascular surgery as well as minimally invasive endovascular neurosurgery and is one of only a few neurosurgeons in the country that is dual-trained in both specialities. He specializes in the evaluation and treatment of patients with brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), vascular tumors, carotid stenosis, and vascular abnormalities of the spinal cord. His practice offers a range of services including diagnostic angiography as well embolization of aneurysms, AVMs, epistaxis, and tumors of the brain and spinal cord. In addition, Dr. Gandhi is an integral part of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at UMDNJ- University Hospital, providing 24/7 treatment of acute stroke with intra-arterial thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy. His other clinical interests include the management and treatment of pituitary tumors and meningiomas. He also performs a variety of spinal interventional procedures including vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty, and dorsal column stimulator placement.
Dr. Gandhi is an active academician with numerous publications within his speciality and involvement in the AANS/CNS Cerebrovascular Section as well the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery. Over the past 10 years he has presented at many national meetings on a broad range of topics in vascular neurosurgery and has been the recipient of honors including the BrainLab Clinical Study Award presented in Munich, Germany.
Since 2009, Dr. Gandhi has also served as the Director of the Endovascular Neurosurgery Fellowship Program that is open to neurosurgeons, radiologists, and neurologists who have completed the prerequisites for neurointerventional training. Additionally, he is the Director of Undergraduate Neurosurgical Education, with the responsibility of mentoring and training medical students during rotations on the neurosurgical service at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School.
In addition to his clinical interests, Dr. Gandhi is also the Director of the Traumatic Brain Injury Basic Science Laboratory that is sponsored by a multi-year grant from the New Jersey TBI Commission. His research is looking at promising new strategies for promoting brain repair and regeneration after traumatic brain injury. This research is in collaboration with the UMDNJ Department of Neuroscience and the New Jersey Institute of Technology through which he has served as thesis mentor for various doctoral candidates.
Dr. Gandhi obtained his undergraduate degree in from Columbia University, New York and his medical doctorate from UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. He completed both his residency in Neurological Surgery and a fellowship in Endovascular Neurosurgery/Neurointerventional Radiology at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY and has been on staff at UMDNJ since 2007.
